Langley North Proudly Serves

2024/2025 School Year Update

Langley North Starfish Pack program is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Langley Sunrise and provides food packs to elementary and middle school children for each weekend of the school year. These children are identified through a process within their schools because their families are facing food insecurity, and they remain anonymous to our Starfish Pack program.

Walnut Grove Secondary School student volunteers pack the Starfish Packs weekly and earn their volunteer hours towards their graduation requirements. WGSS also hold student fundraisers to financially support the Starfish Pack program. A Langley Sunrise Rotary member or other supporter of the program delivers the filled packs to sponsored child’s schools every Friday for the children to take home for the weekend.

During the weekdays students are able to participate in breakfast and lunch programs provided at their schools, and thanks to generous donors, they are able to participate in the North Langley Starfish Pack program and receive food items to help them and their families over the weekends. Packs include easy to prepare food items and fresh produce and protein to help meet their nutritional needs.

We know that children cannot learn when their tummies are empty. With your help, the future looks brighter for kids when they don’t have to worry about being hungry on the weekends.

Our Story

In 2017 the Langley Sunrise Rotary club recognized the need for students in the North Langley area to have nourishing food on weekends. Teachers noticed that children of families in need were less attentive and concentration levels were low on Mondays.

Students were able to participate in breakfast and lunch programs at their school but weekends left a void in their nutrition.  The club decided we would join the many community organizations supporting Starfish Backpacks.

The food is delivered to a central school by Save-on-Foods. The packs are filled by volunteers (both students and parents) they are then delivered to schools on Friday for the students to take home to share with their families on the weekend. We have five different menus that are appropriate for children to prepare if there is not an adult at home.

We started by supporting three schools in Fort Langley and Walnut Grove with 12 backpacks and have grown to 20 packs at five schools in North Langley.

Children can’t learn when their tummies are empty that is why we’re supporting families in need. With your help, the future looks brighter for kids when they don’t have to worry about being hungry on the weekends.

Letter From a Parent

“I just wanted to take a moment to recognize the work that you put into providing these backpacks filled with food for families in need.  I personally am very thankful to be a part of this program this year as there were some weeks that we truly needed the food.

It is so wonderful to have the support of our community during our times of need and I thank you for doing what you can to make it happen.”
